Simplicity in advertising works
I often seem to have debates with people over design, web design and the amount of content within these, in my opinion simplicity works and often works better than cramming a design with content.
This is simply demonstrated with a few top brands – Microsoft vs. Apple being the top one – Apple takes a simplistic approach and has created a very stylised instantly recognisable brand identity. Also Silk Cut cigarettes and the VW beetle adverts are examples of very simplistic adverts working incredibly well.
Television adverts have the same problems but sometimes a simple but good idea can be more beneficial than a more complex approach, my two favourite adverts at the moment are :
The Aldi tea advert where the lady reveals her love for Gin.
And the Darth Vader VW advert – simple yet incredibly memorable
These theories can and should be transferred to web site design to create memorable and user friendly web sites.
